Since 1993, I’ve worked as a freelance editing professional (i.e., a writer, editor, and proofreader). For more than a decade, I worked in the business world. And my, how things have evolved. For a decade, I was employed by a publishing company in New York City. Six reorganisations were place throughout this time period as well. Employees were laid off, transferred, or bought out every time they did so (eg, given a severance package).

All of this serves as evidence that the American workforce is undergoing a transformation. Workplace stability is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. Proof? By 2020, more than 40% of the US employment would be “contracted employees,” according to a 2010 estimate by Intuit, a software business (eg, freelancers, temps, etc). About 60 million people live in this area.

As a home-based company, freelance writing is an excellent option. Simply stated, if you currently have a computer and an internet connection, you can get started for nothing.

 

To be a successful freelance writer, you’ll need to master a variety of skills, such as how to determine your prices, how to attract customers, how to build a website, and how to bill clients. When it comes to starting a small company, you’d face the same setbacks – and possibly at a higher cost.

Even if you’re selling dogs, enough people will see your offer that SOMEONE WILL BUY at some point, remarked a business coach to me years ago. “I don’t care what you’re offering.”
